We are inspired by the coming-of-age films made in the 80’s that we saw growing up, but at the same time, we didn’t see ourselves in the characters who live in those stories. Many of them contain plenty of racism and overt homophobia and happen in a culture of unacknowledged homogeneity and privilege that we don’t want to contribute to idealizing.

Sage is our answer to this. It unfolds a world where queer people are normalized, where mixed-race people get to be complex humans in their own stories, and where families are the people who are there for each other, regardless of whether there is any genetic relationship between them.
The world of Sage is not about perfection. There’s a truly wonderful set of villains, and plenty of challenges for our little group of beloved thespians and their families to grapple with. Along the way, they all learn things about growing up, whether they want to or not. There is love, there is laughter, there is a teacher acting like bacon, and there are many delicious pastries unwittingly involved in classist bullying. Sometimes the hardest thing is simply making the move to begin when you don’t know how things will turn out.
Sage is a coming-of-age story for those who follow their own heart’s path and a comedic love letter to our community of Fairfax, California.
